Page IS Searchable
This page is aimed at people thinking of doing an RYA course in the future, or those who have already completed a course and wish to go over some of the things they may have learned.
Regardless of whether your course is a practical, or shorebased one, investing a few pounds in a couple of books or other resources certainly pays dividends - both in terms of making a course easier, and, possibly more importantly, in refreshing your memory at a later date.
We are now able to offer The Complete Course CD-ROM. This is an excellent way to brush up on just about anything , from Competent Crew right up to Yachtmaster level. The CD costs £49.95. The CD includes tests and example exams based on the RYA courses, for some of these you will also need Practice Navigation Tables and Practice Charts. These are available as a package with the CD at the special price of £62.80. Call for further details, or drop us an email.
You really do not have to spend a fortune to build up quite a useful resource library. Here are some very cheap examples of what are around :-
Download some of the checklists found here:-
Get an offcut of rope to practice tying knots with - if its long enough you can use it to practice throwing a line as well.If you are having trouble tying knots the Scouts are prepared, so click here to find out more.
Thinking about taking the Short Range Certificate (VHF radio) course? Click here for some pre-course reading.
use your imagination - when you're outside "feel" the wind, predict how its angle will change in relation to your direction of travel while walking. Maybe build on it to picture where the sails would be, how they would need changing as you round a corner. Even Rules of the Road could be improvised - don't go around shouting "Starboard!" though :}
This will take you to the RNLI's site , once there have a look for the E-learning site. Even better, if you give them a fiver, they will send you a copy to use off line :)
Follow this link to Colin McMuron's excellent, interractive shorebased course notes. Or try this link , although based in the Med, it is reported to have some good tide explanations.
Want to learn more about sail trim? Have a look at what UK Sailmakers have to say.
Check out what leaflets the MCA and RNLI have. e.g. the MCA have a good leaflet with Distress Signals on, and the do an excellent aide memoire for Distress call - best of all, most if not all of these, are free!This will take you to the MCA's Sea Smart sitewhere there a number of useful bits.
If there are still things you want to look up it's quite easy to spend a fortune. I hope the booklist here will help you focus your search for good books.
Make use of your local library
